Associated Press 28 November 2006

Last November, the parliament of Ukraine voted to pass legislation that recognizes the 1932-1933 famine as genocide by the Russians against the Ukrainian people. The genocide is called Holodomor, or “Death by Hunger” and killed 10 million people. Russian officials claim that the famine, instigated by Stalin, was not specifically directed at the Ukrainian people. The passing benefits the pro-western President, Viktor Yuskchenko. However, only 2 parliament members from the opposing party, lead by prime minister Viktor Yanukovych, voted for the bill. Ten countries, including the U.S. have already recognized the genocide, while the Russian government continues to avoid the issue.
